SEAMPHONI contributing to international standardisation for underwater acoustics

On 20 August 2026, the SEAMPHONI project and its standardisation activities were presented during the plenary meeting of the international standardisation committee ISO/TC 43 – Acoustics.
Santiago Molins Riera from TSI | Técnicas y Servicios de Ingeniería S.L.delivered the presentation, with support from partners DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V. and EurOcean, highlighting how SEAMPHONI aims to bridge research, technological innovation and international standardisation.
A particular focus was placed on SEAMPHONI’s contribution to ISO/TC 43/SC 3, including work related to:
🔹 the measurement of underwater sound from ships;
🔹 the measurement and modelling of underwater ambient sound;
🔹 the verification of ambient sound maps.

By connecting project results with ongoing international standardisation processes, SEAMPHONI is helping ensure that the innovative methods and technologies developed within the project can contribute to harmonised approaches for monitoring and assessing the underwater acoustic environment.

An important step towards turning research results into approaches that can support more effective and consistent monitoring and management of marine protected areas.
